I met Shona from Little Town Bakery a few months ago via Twitter and she recently did a cupcake decorating party for my daughter which was fab so I just had to feature her and her company Little Town Bakery on the blog!
Tell us a bit about how Little Town Bakery started
Little Town Bakery started after reading a magazine article about another home baker. I hadn’t worked for two years after the birth of my son and had trouble finding a job to fit around his needs. Starting my own business was a great way of having a career around my young family.
What is your best selling product?
Without a doubt it is the Vanilla Cupcake. We use Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla in the sponge and icing. Being a pale icing it can be dyed any colour to fit in with any theme or design.
What is your favourite thing to make?
I love making biscuits, they are simple and easy to make and can be wipped up within minutes. But I get the most satisfaction baking bread, nothing beats homemade bread!
Do you do bespoke orders?
We can create any custom design required. Whether it’s a school prom or corporate event, we can accomodate any occasion. With all of our wedding orders we provide a complimentary consultation and sample box of your chosen cakes.
Tell us about your afternoon tea?
We wanted to create something unique in the area and in January 2011 we launched our afternoon tea range. Our range includes mini lemon meringue tartlets, mini loaf cakes, french macaroons, novelty iced biscuits, mini scones and a lot more tasty treats. They are ideal for an afternoon meet up with the girls or even an alternative wedding reception. We can even supply the cake stand and tea set.
What happens at a cupcake decorating party?
They are two types of cupcake decorating parties on offer. We have one suitable for children up to the age of approx 11 and another package for those older than 10. At each party we bring enough cupcakes, decorations and icing for everyone. For the younger ones we provide spatulas and easy to hold icing guns and for the older one we provide all the icing bags and nozzles in which you can learn to pipe cupcake swirls and roses. They are a great alternative for children’s parties, hen parties and nights in with the girls!
What is a pop up stall?
In the latter part of 2010 we had the idea of bringing our products to your workplace, whether it be a business centre or the local leisure centre. They are easy and free to book in Tyne and Wear and the surrounding areas. Everything is brought with us including our pop up table and we even tidy up before we leave. If you require posters or an e-flyer we will print and supply them free of charge to help promote the stall.
Tell us something unusual about yourself
I originally went to university to study Architecture and Product design which is a far cry from baking cakes!
What is your absolute favourite thing to do?
We are a big foodie family from growing our own veg to visiting local farmers markets. The North East has become such a hive for local producers and fantastic shops. It’s becoming part of our day to day lives to visit places like the fish quay in North Shields or nip along to a farm shop to see whats in store.
Shona also has some exciting and unique wedding products so keep your eyes peeled for the next installment!
