There’s no doubt about it, social media is a big part of our lives now and it can make life easier but what is the proper etiquette when it comes to our weddings? Well I’ve got a few hints and tips for you here….
First up DON’T make your wedding an “event” on Facebook that all and sundry can see. Send proper invitations. One way to incorporate FB at this stage is to create a group or page for your wedding and invite your guests to interact on there. This is a great icebreaker for guests who may not know each other (and also a chance for the singles to scope each other out!).
Stay offline during the ceremony (especially if you’re the bride!) You should be concentrating and listening at this point. If it’s good enough for Will’s and Kate to confiscate phones during the ceremony it’s good enough for us!
Use a live stream during the ceremony. This is fab if you have family and friends in far flung places who can’t make it. There is free software available and your videographer should be able to help you with this. I also heard of this recently being used for guests at the ceremony who wouldn’t fit into the ceremony room so they set up a live feed in another room at the venue! This is a fab way to have the venue you want without compromising on your numbers.
Don’t post photos of the bride until she does! This is a big no no. They didn’t invite your hundreds of FB friends to the wedding! It’s her day so let her be the one to do the big reveal.
Appoint a chief Tweeter for the day! Put little place cards on your tables with a #hashtag you’ve created for your wedding and invite guests to tweet. Your chief Tweeter can then read out Tweets during the speeches, after all it’s not unlike reading out cards from absent friends and family.
Instead of the traditional guest book have a social media station. You can set up an area with a laptop, projector and screen so guests can see tweets coming in. They can also leave messages on a FB wall or Tweet a message. They can even be filmed! Also instead of having disposable cameras, you could set up a Flickr account where guests can upload photos straight away.
Enjoy the day and all those special moments that you will only have for that one day. You can always change your FB status from engaged to married the next day!
So hopefully this has given you some useful ways to incorporate social media into your wedding without being too tacky or geeky! Let us know if you’ve incorporated any other novel ways into your day.

I really liked this post and loved the ideas of a chief tweeter and social media station! I like to see new spin on old traditions.
